Some stories of people/whanau buried in Block C, in order of plot number.

Updated: Oct 17, 2023

William Donald Stuart MacDonald's beautiful red granite monument stands at the entrance to the cemetery at the corner of Block C. Known as a great horseman, he oversaw or managed properties at Ngatapa, Matawhero, Whatatutu and Tokomaru Bay before taking up Lorne Station on his own account. He entered parliament in 1908 and held several ministerial positions. After Sir Joseph Ward's defeat, William was unanimously chosen to lead the Liberal Party. He died suddenly while in office in 1920, aged 58.
