John Hervey's grave in Block I is shown below. He was trading from a store on the Waipaoa riverbank in the mid 1800s when Matawhero was the main pakeha settlement of Turanganui. Sailing ships came up the river to collect salted pork and wheat, and shipped these to Auckland.
