The three stonemason businesses in Gisborne are all working on the job of reinstating the recovered headstones.
Originally the grave plots would have been raised above the ground, with concrete edging and capping, often a decorative wrought iron surround, and with the headstone located at the "head". The recovered headstones are being carefully located where the "head" of the original grave was, then securely pinned onto tiered concrete bases set directly into the ground. As this work is rolled out, the view of the cemetery is changing, but this is a compromise the historians and cemetery management are willing to accept.
